Did I just hear what I thought I heard?
So I'm sitting here listening to the President's press conference (it's such a rare occassion that I figure it warrants the attention) and I hear something that shocks me. Shocks me because:
a) It's a coherent sentence.
b) It makes sense.
c) I actually agree with it.
So I'm wondering is he still in campaign mode, or is he actually going to try and follow through on his promise of healing the divide in America. What could he have said that has me so amazed? Well, when asked about his feelings on the large evangelical turnout for the election, and that they are his base, his response was that (roughly paraphrased) "He wants to be the president for all America. It doesn't matter whether you're Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or don't even believe in God, no one should question your patriotism. Patriotism and love of country doesn't depend upon belief in God, and it's not my job, or the job of any President to tell you that you must believe in God."
Did he actually just say something nice about atheists? After all, didn't his father go on the record saying that
atheists aren't patriots? Because, if that's what he actually said, then wow. He actually said something good.
Of course, I still don't like the fact that he's bankrupting our future, dismantling civil rights, undermining US foreign relations, and a myriad of other things, but hey, it's a start.
Welcome to the Theocratic States of America
I know Ohio is still up in the air, but think of it this way; last time around the Bush Administration took their 500,000 vote loss in the popular election as an overwhelming mandate for change, so think of what will happen this time around.
Dear Europe-
Blue America here. I know it's hard to believe, but over here half of us don't like shape of our government at all. So please don't take it out on any of us travelling abroad. While many of us may not speak anything beyond mangled English we're not all that bad. Just very misguided. We need a little help from our friends to get back on the road to liberal (not big L, small l) democracy.
That's where you come in. Remember how about 60 years ago we help you out in taking care of an extremist that came to power through the electoral process? Well, I'm not saying things are that bad yet, but if you could help us out before things get that bad we'd really appreciate it. I mean, how'd you do it? You've got an efficient election process, good health care, free speech, and any number of other things. And we're slip-sliding towards theocracy.
Yours,
Blue America
You know what today is, right?
5 days until my birthday, that's what. Oh yeah, and apparently there's some sort of election going on in a developing democracy. So get out there and vote.
Oh, and about my birthday... I'll be 28. I've been playing around with the idea of linking to my Amazon wish list for quite a while, but I keep deciding against it. Don't know why, other than not wanting to look like a greedy SOB. Still, now I've mentioned it.
